New Year Celebration in Nassau

Spending the new year in the Bahamas with my husbands family may not seem very exciting but Nassau in New Providence Island looked extremely promising. A week full of fun, sun, sight-seeing and shopping in the Bahamas was exactly what I needed. The new year’s parade, Junkanoo was on also on the top of our list. It had been recommended by scores of our friends who suggested that it would be best to book the tickets for the event online.

The colors of the Caribbean were in full force during the festival. It was spectacular. Right from the music to the dancers and of course the costumes. All of New Providence Island seemed to dance to the tunes of the festival all at once. The street food on Bay Street was better than expected and we ended up going there time and again as the festival ravaged on.

The new year was here and it was surprising how time just flew by but there was still loads to do on New Providence Island. The town was a perfect blend of old-world charm and modern architecture that was reflected in its upscale hotels and banks. Our hotel was located on Cable Beach which had many water sports such as scuba diving and snorkeling. The glass-bottom boats had their own charm. We thoroughly enjoyed the walking tour which began from Rawson Square. The best part was obviously shopping for handicrafts at the Straw Market on Bay Street.

Many people would prefer taking any of the two bridges that are links New Providence Island to Paradise Island but we decided to take the ferry instead. We spent a nice quiet evening strolling through Versailles Garden. The ‘Silence” statue was spellbinding. Overall it was a great holiday and we are thinking of making yet another trip to the Bahamas next year.
