Super-Speed Broadband Initiatives - Point Topic Reveals Selected Locations

Point Topic, the telecom research firm, has come out with maps showing the selected locations where super-speed broadband will first be enabled in the UK. The high-speed broadband programme is part of the BT Openreach initiatives to prepare the UK for the predicted increase in demand for broadband internet services in the future.

Point Topic has released four maps showing the locations were the programme would be implemented. Openreach has given priority to areas around London and other densely populated cities and towns for the launch of the programme. According to estimates, nearly 4.52 million people in the UK will have access to fibre-based broadband by the end of 2010. It is expected that this figure will more than double by 2011, with almost 10 million people benefiting from the upgrades.

At the end of the project in 2012, almost 21 million users are predicted to be using the new age internet services.

As expected, Openreach has focussed its attention on high population and high demand areas to commence the programme. However, Chief Analyst at Point Topic, Tim Johnson, believes that even by the end of this project in 2012, almost half the areas of high demand will remain uncovered. The Point Topic report also cautions that the discrimination in the selection of areas will lead to disputes among those have super- speed broadband and those who are still using the old and slow connections.
